  Crumpler Resigns!
Star tight end a key keeper for Atlanta
By Len Pasquarelli / ESPN.com

ATLANTA -- Turns out his game-winning touchdown catch wasn't the only thing Atlanta Falcons tight end Alge Crumpler celebrated Sunday.

The four-year veteran, regarded as the premier tight end in the NFC and perhaps the best player overall at his position in the league, has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the Falcons and off the 2005 free agency market. Contract details were not immediately available, but it is believed the Falcons will announce the accord as early as Monday.

Falcons officials have made no secret of the importance of retaining Crumpler, who would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring had the extension not been completed. It is likely that, absent an extension, Atlanta would have considered designating Crumpler a "franchise" player.

On-and-off negotiations have stretched over several months. The Falcons are believed to have substantially increased their offer from where it was a month or so ago.

Crumpler, 26, is an emerging star in the league and was chosen for his first Pro Bowl game in 2003. In what is becoming the NFL's "year of the tight end," he has emerged as the go-to receiver for Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick, and that was evident again Sunday, when Crumpler had four catches for 103 yards.

That included the game-winning 20-yard touchdown catch against New Orleans with 1:22 remaining. Crumpler made both big plays on the two-snap drive, preceding his touchdown grab with a 27-yard reception. He has developed an undeniable synergy with Vick and clearly flourished in the offense installed by coordinator Greg Knapp.

For the season, Crumpler has 43 catches for 709 yards and six touchdowns, leading the Falcons in all three categories. The former North Carolina star already has posted career bests in all three receiving categories this season.

He has 16 receptions for 20 yards or more, the most in the NFL by a tight end. All four of his catches against the Saints were for 20 yards or more.

A second-round choice in the 2001 draft, Crumpler has 148 catches for 2,046 yards and 17 touchdowns in 59 career appearances, including 48 starts.

This is the best thing we got going as far as a passing game. But I gotta say.. It's a pretty good thing.

  Smoked
So last night was fun, but mang...do I hate being around cigarette smoke for an extended period of time. I hardly ever ever am, so when it does occur I just shut up and deal with it. But for about 5 hours last night I was in a house where 7 other people chain smoked them sticks all night long. The only thing that made it bearable was my buddy Tom's guitar playing. Here is most of his setlist.

Freebird, All Apologies, Dear Prudence, Deal, Where Are You Going, Big Eyed Fish, Minerets, Seek Up, Comfortably Numb, Mother, St Stephen, Bug, Divided Sky, Lake of Fire, Grey Street

  Heading Out
Well, I am heading out of tomn tomorrow for a little bit. Tomorrow I board a flight in Lansing, make a quick stop in Washington DC, and arrive in Neward, New Jersey. Yee. At which time I will meet up with Bob Jones who will take me to Jersey City and it's possible we will venture to Brooklyn tomorrow night. On Saturday we will wake and go to Ben Colson's wedding in Emmaus, PA and the reception in Philadelphia. On Sunday we will rise and return to Jersey City to watch the Falcons crush the Giants. At which time either my father will be picking me up and I will spend the week in Holley, NY or I will stay and meet up with Sara once she reaches New Jersey. Not sure what is happening yet. But first thing first. If you need me, I'll be back.

  Picking NFL Winners
At the midpoint of the season I am 81-49 picking the winners of NFL games.

These picks are never thought about too hard. They are my initial reaction to looking at the lineups. I've screwed up a lot of easy ones and have called a lot of hard ones. It's almost impossible to do much better in the crazy parity world which is the NFL. Anything can and does happen each weekend. That's what makes it great.

  Heating Up

Michael Mad Dog Vick and the dirty birds face the bucs tomorrow at home. The Falcons look to improve their 4th best record and go to 7-2. Should be no sweat.

  State of the BMS
So almost everything pretty much sucks these days. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate myself on this 3 month hiatus from working and also give a quick explanation of how much it sucks. It's one thing when you have a job thats pretty good and you enjoy going and even though there are some nuisannces that are all minor you deal with it and move on. It's another thing when you have no fucking job and you sit around on your ass all day and do nothing and get completely bored and depressed out of your skull all day. Today is the 3 month anniversary of me basically throwing away my job and moving 12 hours away. Don't get me wrong, nothing would have changed had I known what I know now. Well maybe a few things. I still would have moved with my girlfriend and have been completely supportive of her turn to do what she needs to do to get where she needs to be. I would have left my last job a little different. See, I left with this impression that I would still work for them from home. All the tasks that I had done at work, AND MORE, can easily be done outside of the office and the impression I had and was given before I left was that I would be able to do this and would receive work. Ehh. Not so fast. I've done about 70 hours of work in 3 months. That's pathetic. Have I made a mistake? Am I asking the wrong person to send me work? It was like scrapping teeth against a chalkboard to get them to even pay me for the first invoice I sent. I guess my impressions were wrong. Either that or they just don't care. I don't know. I remember my last day. I wrote them a fat check for my office computer and it was like, "we won't give you a exit interview cause you will still be working with us". Man, what I wouldn't give to be able to have that exit interview now and tell them what I really thought at the time. I just didn't have the thoughts organized. So I sit around. I'm looking hard for a new job. I'm hopefully going to get a job at Walmart or something. They usually need more help when it's the holiday season. I don't even care anymore. I've been sending my resume out to about 10 places a day. There are no jobs where I am in the field that I was in. So I've basically tossed that career out the window. Future employers could stumble upon this horribly pathetic page and read that I am pathetic and that I have no real ambition anymore and say, "well screw this guy, he's no good". All I know is that shit sucks, but I don't care. I don't need your pity, unless you want to write me a check to pay off my student loans. If you want to give me a job I'll be the best god damn worker you have now or will ever have. It's all I know. I've watched enough ESPN over the past 3 months to kill a small child. I'll have to post some bullshit so this gets moved farther down the page. Screw it, I'm out.

  Life is Good

I have yet to really express how excellent this season is going. Vick still needs to learn a lot. He has to make better deciscions, but... The Falcons have started 6-2 and have a commanding lead in the NFC South division and that is excellent. more later.

  There and Back Again
1,444 miles later I arrived back in Mount Pleasant at 2:45 AM last night. 10 minutes ago I casted my vote. Awesome. Now I need to take a shower.
