Sam Roberts / Guster last night
Straight up Rock and roll.
So last night my ladies and i drive down to albany to catch guster w\ sam roberts at the palace theatre. it was a pretty interesting show. i went into the show having really no idea what to expect. ive never listened to guster, and i only knew that mustard highly recommended sam roberts.. i made sure we showed up early enough to catch sam's band.. when we walked in i saw a girl who used to work with us, that was cool... for a few minutes i thought i was at some high school dance or something.. there were "like" so many young kids it was crazy.. think dave matthews fans, but 5 years younger. there were some older people here and there and people that i could tell were cool.. but i couldnt help but thinking, my mom would pick me up outside the concert at 11.. i enjoyed wearing my trey is wilson flip the bird shirt... but anyway... the lights go down and sam and his band came out.. they were indeed pretty good.. pretty straight forward rock and roll.. sam is definately an entertainer though.. the band had a lot of energy. some songs were better than others.. the sound wasnt ideal for them though, as they were somewhat muffled and you could barely tell the vocals.. but he had good crowd interaction here and there in between songs, except i hate when the dude makes the crowd get up and yells at the crowd and stuff... but i can understand if everyone is sitting and youre all juiced.. why not get some fucking movement.. he kept giving props to canada and montreal his home town... he dedicated a song to potheads.. yeah!... the lead guitarist was all over the place jumpin up and down... sam played guitar on and off. and there was another guy who switched between keys and guitar.. and a drummer..and a bass player.. so five players.. mostly guitar... a couple songs the guitars just went off crazy style hard rockin edge type stuff.. it's cool.. im more of a fan of other sounds floating around than just guitars and drums.. so i liked the songs with keys more i think... either way, i bought their cd after the show and im listening now.. its good stuff... .. then the stage people switched up the stuff and guster came out... guster is also a guitar band with two lead guys who switched guitars every song it seemed.. that guitar tech was real busy the whole show... man!.. this other guy played bass on some songs, guitar on others.. and some sort of sampling keyboard thing here and there, i wasnt really following everything he was doing.. the bass stuff was pretty much just moving the song, there wasnt any funky bass.. the percussionist/drummer guy was awesome... he was really really good.. most of the songs he played percussion rig on and a few he played the smaller drum kit... the guster guy joked in between a song about how the percussion player was using superglue and fake skin to keep his hands together and that it was falling apart and that... once it did fall apart he would play the rest of the set with bloody palms.. cool!... the sound was much better for guster, you could hear their vocals and such... i really enjoyed their music... it was good, parts of some songs sounded recognizable, but i wasnt sure... they played one long set which was about 90 minutes maybe and then came out and did 4 or 5 encore songs.. the lights were also pretty cool.. they did banter here and there in between songs about pointless stuff, which sometimes is cool and other times annoying.. it was neither... but musically, it was pretty entertaining... i got a little bored near the end cause it wasnt a rezi show or anything... but i stuck through... there was some commotion in the crowd and i definately turned around to give the chit chat girls my death stare a few times, but otherwise, the crowd was fine to work with... so the last song they played they did acoustic with tamberine, two acoustic guitars and a banjo... it was pretty cool, people in the crowd only shouted a few times.. so you could hear it...
final thoughts: yeah, i didnt know what to expect and i left thinking it was a good show... it was a good show... i dont have any other shows by each to compare against... some parts were better than others, but on a whole id say it was definately worth the time spent...
